It starts earlier than most people expect, and it has an outsized effect on quality of life, independence, and even longevity later on.

Why Muscle Is About More Than Strength
Muscle mass is closely tied to metabolic health, since muscle tissue plays a major role in regulating blood sugar and overall energy use. Lower muscle mass is associated with poorer blood sugar control and a higher risk of metabolic issues, independent of body weight.
Muscle also functions as a kind of physiological reserve for the rest of the body. During illness, injury, or extended bed rest, the body draws on muscle tissue for recovery and repair. People who enter these periods with more muscle mass generally have more resilience to draw on and tend to bounce back more effectively.
There’s also a strong connection between muscle mass and how well the body regulates inflammation and immune function over the long term, which is part of why maintaining muscle is increasingly discussed as a marker of overall healthy ageing, not just physical capability.
None of this requires a dramatic transformation of your body composition. Even modest, consistent improvements in strength over time translate into a meaningfully larger metabolic and physiological reserve than doing nothing at all.
It’s also worth pointing out that muscle and general cardiovascular fitness support each other rather than competing for your time. Someone who maintains both tends to have a distinct advantage over someone who has trained only one, since each protects against a different aspect of age-related decline, and together they cover a much wider range of what healthy ageing actually requires.
The Link Between Muscle and Independence
Everyday tasks like climbing stairs, carrying groceries, getting up from a low chair, or catching your balance after a stumble all depend on adequate muscle strength and power. As muscle declines, these tasks become harder, sometimes gradually enough that people adjust their lives around the limitation rather than addressing the underlying cause.
This matters enormously for long-term independence. Maintaining sufficient muscle strength and power is one of the strongest predictors of remaining able to live independently and move confidently later in life, far more so than most people assume when they picture healthy ageing.
It’s worth pausing on this point, because it reframes what strength training is actually for. It’s less about a particular number on a leg press machine, and more about preserving the ability to do the things that make daily life comfortable and self-sufficient, for as long as possible.
Power Matters as Much as Strength
It’s worth distinguishing between pure strength and muscular power, which is the ability to produce force quickly. Power tends to decline even faster than strength with age, and it’s disproportionately important for things like recovering balance after a trip, a scenario where you often only have a fraction of a second to react.
Training for power doesn’t require anything exotic. Movements performed with intentional speed on the lifting or pushing phase, such as standing up from a chair briskly or performing a controlled jump-based exercise if appropriate for your fitness level, help maintain this quality alongside general strength work.
It’s a quality worth training deliberately rather than assuming it will simply come along with general strength work, since the two don’t always track together as closely as people expect, especially later in life.
Protecting Your Muscle at Any Age
The best time to start protecting your muscle mass is now, regardless of your current age or fitness level. The core ingredients are consistent and well established, and none of them require a drastic lifestyle overhaul:
Resistance train at least twice a week, targeting all major muscle groups
Progressively increase the challenge over time, rather than staying at the same weight or difficulty indefinitely
Eat enough protein throughout the day to support muscle repair and growth
Stay generally active with walking and other movement between strength sessions
Prioritise sleep, which plays a major role in muscle recovery and adaptation

Muscle loss with age is common, but it isn’t destiny. The body’s ability to build and retain muscle in response to training doesn’t disappear with age, it just requires deliberate effort. Starting, or continuing, a consistent strength habit is one of the most protective things you can do for the decades ahead.
